Students with disabilities may find it difficult to read and access a standard textbook or other class materials. Alternate Media provides a way for textbooks and class materials to be converted to e-text, audio, Braille, large print, or other alternate formats. The counselor may recommend alternate media and refer the student to meet with the Access Specialist.
Getting Started
The first step is to determine if you qualify. Your SAS counselor can help you evaluate your needs. An Academic Accommodations Plan is completed listing the appropriate accommodations for your specific disability. The next step is to meet with the Access Specialist. Together, you and the Access Specialist will go over your request and determine the best way to prepare and deliver your materials. The Access Specialist will also discuss your responsibilities in the alternate media process. Planning ahead is essential for a successful semester. Choose your classes early, find out what books you will need, and submit your Alternate Media Request as soon as possible. The better you plan, the smoother the semester will go.
General Guidelines and Policies for Students
Once you have this accommodation authorized by a counselor, please meet with the Access Specialist as soon as possible to determine which format(s) will work best for your needs. After the accommodation is authorized and you have met with the Access Specialist, you can request your Alternate Media online or by making an appointment.
