These tools are designed to accommodate diverse learning needs, ensuring that all students have equal opportunities to succeed regardless of their abilities or learning styles. Below is a list of tools MiraCosta College provides that empowers students to engage with course materials in ways that best suit their preferences.

If you have a disability or medical condition impacting learning and have not yet been authorized to receive academic accommodations, you are encouraged to contact the Student Accessibility Services (SAS) office. The SAS office can be reached at 760.795.6658 or by email at sas@miracosta.edu. The SAS office will help you determine what accommodations are available for you.

Immersive Reader in Canvas
MiraCosta College’s Canvas system includes an Immersive Reader feature at the upper right of every Canvas page (Pages only, not assignments, discussions, or other Canvas tools). Immersive Reader supports Universal Design for Learning by providing tools supporting student comprehension of course material, including language translation options and high quality voices to read aloud the content on pages. SensusAccess in Canvas
MiraCosta College’s Canvas system includes the SensusAccess document converter. To use SensusAccess locate the “S” (image above) next to the title of each Canvas page or next to each item in the Canvas modules view. This tool provides a way to convert and download the files on demand into other file types, media types, and languages, compliant with accessibility standards. Aira

The Aira app offers on-demand, remote visual interpreting services. Users can download the app, press a button, and their phone's camera streams a live video to Aira’s professional visual interpreters. These interpreters can explain surroundings, describe scenes, navigate, or read out loud. Aira also features Access AI, which allows users to upload an image and receive a detailed AI-generated description verified by a human interpreter.

This service is available to anyone on MiraCosta College campuses, including students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Users on any of the college’s four campuses can make free calls to visual interpreters by downloading the app for Android or iPhone.
