If you are a Veteran/Military Affiliated (VMA) student planning to use your VA education benefits at MiraCosta College, you will complete the following steps.
- Request for all official transcripts from all previously attended colleges, universities, and training institutes to be sent to MiraCosta Admissions & Records. This includes military transcripts. Request your JST or your CCAF transcript.
- NOTE: Transcripts, including JST and CCAF, are not considered official unless they are sent directly to MiraCosta College from the institution that awarded the original credit. Copies that the student can download themselves, that have already been opened by the student or that the student had emailed to themselves are not considered official.
- Electronic transcripts may be sent directly from the institution to transcripts@miracosta.edu. Hard copies may be mailed to:
MiraCosta College
Admissions and Records
1 Barnard Drive
Oceanside, CA 92056 - Once all transcripts are received, you must request that they be evaluated by speaking with a counselor from the Veterans Counseling team. This is not automatic. Not completing this step will cause a delay in receiving your benefits.
- For veterans and active duty only, submit the Military Priority Registration Request Form.
- Matriculation includes: Spartan Prep (orientation + advising), Math/English Placement Test (if needed)
- Although this is not required, students are encouraged to apply for financial aid in order to supplement education costs that may not be covered by using GI Bill® benefits and/or Tuition Assistance.
- Appointments can be scheduled by visiting the Counseling website.
- If all official transcripts are not received and evaluated, please have copies of all unofficial transcripts available for your appointment.
- You must have an ID number to get an appointment
- New VR&E students: Abbreviated Education Plans are not recommended. Students using VR&E benefits should have a Comprehensive Education Plan created to submit to their assigned VR&E Counselor.
* Eligibility is determined based on each student's individual situation. Some students are ineligible for an Abbreviated Education Plan based on prior education credit.
- Student must enroll in classes prior to requesting certification for VA Educational Benefits.
- You must only enroll in the courses listed on your education plan. If you have questions about the courses you are enrolling for, please make an appointment to speak with a Veterans Counselor.
- Active Duty Only: Students planning to use Military Tuition Assistance must contact their Educational Services Officer (ESO) prior to enrolling in order to obtain authorization forms. Submit form to Cashier's Office.
- The LOI is your request to use GI Bill benefits. Your classes will not be certified if you do not submit an LOI.
- For assistance on how to complete the LOI, see the LOI tutorial.
- DD-214 or Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) for Reservists
- Certificate of Eligibility (COE) OR eBenefits Enrollment Education Status OR Statement of Benefits from vets.gov
- VA Form 22-1995
For Post 9/11 GI Bill® and Veteran Readiness & Employment (VR&E) recipients only
Complete your LOI the same day as enrollment to avoid courses being dropped for non-payment. Payment of tuition and fees for certifiable courses will be deferred to the VA.
