Social Justice & Equity Center Internship
The Social Justice & Equity Interns are MiraCosta students who represent the Social Justice & Equity Center (SJEC) and the Student Equity Department. They serve as student staff members for the SJEC, providing resources to members of the college and community. They provide assistance for diversity and inclusion programming, as well as support for events related to the college’s commemorations of History and Heritage Programming & Days (HHM). This support includes some planning, logistics, and promotion of events. Interns, when invited, will give brief presentations to classes and meetings, publicizing upcoming activities. They receive career development and academic credit (1 unit) for completing an internship with a faculty mentor that culminates in a project related to a topic of their own choosing. Each Intern has a specialty that determines their ongoing responsibilities (flyers, social media, data, etc.). As college representatives, SJEC Interns are expected to be role models for their peers, maintain and demonstrate a professional attitude, and always execute sound judgment while supporting MiraCosta’s commitment to creating a racially just campus climate.

The program has meticulously outlined five pivotal skills that interns will cultivate, elevating their capabilities and impact in various domains:
- Interpersonal Skills Development
Build relationships, enhance communication, and promote team collaboration through various activities and group discussions. - Awareness & Empathy
Understand diverse histories, cultures, and contemporary challenges of various marginalized communities. - Theoretical Knowledge
Acquire insights from key social justice theorists to frame real-world issues. - Critical Thinking
Evaluate societal structures critically and explore their implications on marginalized communities. - Advocacy Skills
Develop and execute advocacy campaigns or projects based on the AOP framework.
