I came to San Diego from the Central Valley in 2011 and have been at MiraCosta College
since 2014. During my tenure, I have served as an associate faculty member in Nursing
and Allied Health, transitioning into Student Health Services as a Nurse Practitioner
in 2021. My nursing background includes acute care nursing in telemetry and step-down/observation,
medical-surgical patient education, and nursing academia.
Michael Truong (he), MSW, ASW
Clinical Case Manager
Michael is an Associate Clinical Social Worker and proud North County San Diego native
who attained his Master’s of Social Work (MSW) at California State University San
Marcos. Michael's approach revolves around meeting individuals where they are at,
moment to moment. His focus on building a supportive therapeutic relationship underscores
a commitment to prioritizing his client's health, safety, and overall well-being.
As a second-generation Vietnamese-American, Michael's personal journey as a child
of refugees during the Vietnamese diaspora has enriched his perspective with cultural
humility, fostering inclusivity, and emphasizing the inherent dignity and worth of
every individual. With over 3 years of hands-on case management experience in San
Diego County's Child & Family Well-Being Department, Michael served as an Emergency
Response Social Worker. In this role, he assessed safety, responded to crises, and
facilitated connections to a plethora of community resources for families in need.
Michael's clinical orientation is a mindfulness based and trauma-informed therapeutic
approach utilizing Motivational Interviewing, Solution Focused Therapy, and Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy. Also drawing from over 5 years of experience in mentoring, instructing,
and training, he intentionally focuses on developing meaningful and empowering partnerships
with those he works with. Michael is driven by a sincere and passionate drive to holistically
serve and advocate for those in the MiraCosta college community. Outside of his professional
work, he enjoys training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, plants and nature, coffee/tea, technology,
video/tabletop games, and learning new hobbies.

I received my Master's in Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner (NP) certification
from the University of California San Francisco in 1991. I worked in the Community
Clinic system for over 23 years and I have worked in MiraCosta Health Services for
over 25 years. My approach in providing medical care to our students is to listen
carefully, obtain a complete mental and physical health history, and establish a treatment
plan together with the student. In addition to my training as an RN and FNP, I received
academic training in Fine Arts with a focus on Painting and Life Drawing. I balance
my NP medical work with art and each of these fields favorably influences the other.
