Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLO)
These outcomes should explain in clear and concise terms the specific skills students should be able to demonstrate, produce, and know as a result of the particular course objectives.
Creating, Modifying, and Deleting Outcomes
- Departments need to submit all new/revised CSLOs properly to ensure they are correctly reported in the Course Outlines of Record (COR) and the College Catalog.
- To officially create, modify, or delete a CSLO, please complete the appropriate SLO Forms located on the OAC SharePoint site.
Guidance in Developing Outcomes
- The OAC Handbook is an important reference tool; please refer to this document for more details and additional web resources (particularly “Assessment Cycle, step 1”)
- A few key highlights from the handbook are listed below:
- One to three CSLOs are required for each course/program.
- Each course and program should have unique outcomes.
- Use active operational verbs that reflect what the student will be able to do at the end of the course-See (Bloom’s Taxonomy)
- Create outcomes that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time bound (SMART).
- Note that SLOs are not the same thing as the Performance Objectives for the course.
- Please do not include the assessment method in the outcome statement.
Outcomes in Syllabi
- Current CSLOs must be included in syllabi across all sections of the course.
- PSLOs should also be noted on syllabi for the core courses within that program’s discipline.
- Please refer to the MiraCosta syllabus checklist for more information.
