1098T Tax Form
The 1098T tax form is a tuition statement that eligible educational institutions provide to students who pay enrollment fees during the calendar year. Colleges must file for each student that reportable transactions were made to qualified tuition and fees. Students and parents can use the tax form to claim the Lifetime Learning Credit or American opportunity tax credit on their federal tax returns. The college cannot give out tax advice regarding your returns and credits.
You May Not Qualify For a 1098T If:
- You have no reportable tax information for the tax year.
- The amount financial aid or Waivers (CCPG) that you received is greater than the amount of eligible tuition and fees that you paid for out of pocket.
- If a 3rd party paid your entire eligible tuition and fees. For example, Chapter 33., Department of Rehab, MCC Promise Grant, Marine or Navy.
- If your mailing address on record is not current or missing, please go to your SURF portal to update your contact information.
If you did not provide a social security number, or have an address on file, please submit a Change of Personal Information form, along with a copy of your Social Security Card and Photo ID before December 1st. Form 1098-T is always issued in the student's name and reported under the student's TIN. If a student is claimed by a parent or legal guardian for tax purposes, that individual may then be able to use the information on Form 1098-T when preparing their tax returns. Please consult a tax professional for more information.
