Why HSE
I have been teaching English at MiraCosta since 2015 and Highly Supported English since we started the program in 2017. My goal in all of my classes is to support my students to be successful and to help them grow as writers, readers, and critical thinkers. I love teaching HSE because it allows me to have more direct connections with students because of the small class environment. I also love helping my students build a community of learners committed to their success.
Themes
My classes are designed to meet the needs of each individual student and celebrate the diversity of backgrounds, cultures, strengths, and interests students bring to our classes. I do not compare students to one another; instead, I ask each student to engage in a process of personal growth and learning.
Reading Examples
While we read a variety of texts, one of my favorites is Trevor Noah's Born a Crime.
Personal Interests
When I'm not teaching, I love doing yoga, gardening, and spending time with my husband and our dog, Thor. I lived in Carlsbad and Vista for 20 years, but I now live in San Diego. I've proudly watched two of my children (my daughter and step-son) study at MiraCosta then transfer to UCLA and UC Santa Cruz.
