Welcome to MiraCosta College Letters Department, Highly Supported English (or HSE for short) website! HSE’s mission is to provide students with extra support to successfully complete transfer-level English. HSE assists students with reading, writing, and managing the workload demand of an English 100 class.
Mission
The MiraCosta College Letters Department’s HSE Program recognizes the importance of providing students with ample levels of support to meet the demands of a transfer-level English course. By adopting and developing a program based on the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) model, HSE offers students the necessary support for successful completion of transfer-level coursework, while retaining transfer-level course outcomes essential to student persistence and success in career and academic paths. The HSE co-requisite model promotes retention and success in English 100 by providing students individualized attention, peer-to-peer collaboration and scaffolded assignments in a small class size setting. With student success in mind, HSE offers intensive practice in the skills needed to read college-level texts and compose college-level essays.
About HSE
HSE is an English (ENGL) 100/52 co-requisite option. HSE combines ENGL 100 with ENGL 52, providing students with a support course to fulfill their transfer-level ENGL 100 requirement. With the assistance of a 2-unit ENGL 52 support course, HSE offers intensive practice in the skills needed to read college-level texts and compose college-level essays. In addition to assistance with composition and reading, HSE provides students with technology acquisition, offers mentorship opportunities, familiarizes students with campus support services, utilizes embedded classroom writing consultants and employs writing strategy and grammar labs. Student work is celebrated throughout the semester and culminates in a capstone growth portfolio. The ENGL 52 support course does not assign additional work and is focused solely on the successful completion of ENGL 100. HSE is appropriate for all students who want more support with the work of reading and writing in the English 100 course.
